GENERAL DESCRIPTION

WORKSHOP VENUE AND DATES

Venue: Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Universitat de le Illes Balears. Palma de Mallorca. Spain.

Dates: June 15 to June 21, 2008.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

To provide participants with updated background information and a PRACTICAL approach to the study of clinically relevant mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance. This edition of the Workshop will focus on Pseudomonas aeruginosa expressing extended spectrum beta-lactamases or carbapenemases, with altered outer membrane permeability, mutations in QRDR of the DNA gyrase, mutations in the mismatch repair system genes, and hyperexpressing  efflux pumps or the chromosomal beta-lactamase AmpC.  The course is intended for 20 participants. The organizing committee will accept applications from young scientists with previous training in Clinical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases who are interested in the study of antimicrobial resistance.

GENERAL WORKING ORGANIZATION

The Workshop will include:

  • Lectures covering the biochemical and genetic bases of resistance to antimicrobial agents.
  • Practical laboratory sessions. This will provide the main focus of activity during the course. The sessions will provide participants with up to date knowledge of the methodologies more commonly used for phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents. Participants will be divided into pairs for the laboratory sessions and course Faculty members will be present.
  • Presentation and discussion of short cases related with antimicrobial resistance mechanisms.

Scientific activities during the course will be arranged as a daily basis as follows:

  • Lecture (8.30-9.30).
  • Laboratory work session (9.30-17.30):
    • comments on objectives.
    • performing experiments.
    • discussion of clinical cases.
    • evaluation of previous results.
    • preparation of new assays.
  • Lunch (14.00-15.30).
  • Lecture (17.30-18.30).

SOCIAL EVENTS

Welcome buffet dinner (June 15, 2008). Official dinner (June 18, 2008). Cultural tour to Mallorca Island, followed by a non-official lunch party on the beach (June 21, 2008).

TUITION FEES

  • 1,200 euros.
  • Fees cover the 7-day program, including hotel accommodation (7 nights) and breakfast, lunch, social events, and transportation from the hotel to the Workshop venue.
