Marc Morell received his BA Social and Cultural Anthropology (1999) and BA History (2002) at the Universitat de Barcelona, MA International Tourism Policy (2001) at the University of North London, DEA [Advanced Studies Diploma] Anthropology] Anthropology (2008) and Masters Human Evolution and Cognition (2009) at the Universitat de les Illes Balears. He is now finishing his doctoral studies with the support of the Direcció General de Recerca Desenvolupament Tecnològic i Innovació of the Govern de les Illes Balears (2006-2010).
He specialises in political anthropology and does research on tourism and urban issues by focusing on the production of space in market society. He has been a visiting postgraduate at the Department of Tourism Studies at L-Università ta’ Malta (2007), the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester (2009) and the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen’s Belfast University (2010) and has carried out ethnographic research both in Majorca and Malta. He has worked as coordinator and ethnographer of the local team at the Universitat de les Illes Balears within the Mediterranean Voices: Oral History and Cultural Practice in Mediterranean Cities of the EUROMED Heritage Project II financed by the European Union (2003-2005).
He is a member of the Grup de Recerca i Acció Urbanes “Ciutats volgudes, Ciutat viscuda”, the Institut Català d’Antropologia, the European Association of Social Anthropologists and the Commission of Urban Anthropology of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences.
RESEARCH TOPIC
Production of space in market society. The current fields this research topic covers are:
- Urban anthropology (space and policy, social classes and reproduction of the social relations of production, governance and social exclusion, gentrification and neighbours’ organization).
- Anthropology of tourism (tourism and society, tourism and capitalist mode of production, commodification and heritagisation, conservation and development).
