Triple Excellence
17 January, 2012

The Physics, Computation and Applications Group, which includes the UIB Relativity Group (GRG), has obtained the classification of “excellence” in research competitiveness given by the Government of the Balearic Islands. This classification is part of an ongoing effort by the local administration to economically support research groups according to their competitiveness. Only 6 out of 71 research groups that applied to this call have attained this excellence award.
“Physics, Computation and Applications” is a new interdepartmental group, created around the UIB Institute of Applied Computing with Community Code (IAC3). The group´s Principal Investigator is Carles Bona García, UIB professor and member of GRG. The group is comprised of the Relativity Group and the Image Processing and Analysis Group (Grup de Tractament, Anàlisi i Modelització d’Imatges, TAMI). The main research topics are gravity and numerical relativity, gravitational waves astronomy, computational applications and image processing.
International Excellence“Physics, Computation and Applications” is also one of the Focus Areas of the Euro-Mediterranean Campus for Tourism and Water (Campus e-MTA), a campus co-lead by the UIB which has recently obtained an “International Excellence” award by the Spanish government with the goal of improving the quality of the University System through specialization and internationalization of its best universities.
Last, the UIB Physics Graduate Program has also obtained an Excellence Award, granted by the Spanish Government to recognize the high scientific, technical and educational level of these programs. Previously this distinction was known as “Quality Mention” and this program had already earned it continuously since 2002. The graduate program will be offered by the Doctoral School of the University of the Balearic Islands (EDUIB), which specifically aims at the organization and management of the programs which have been honored with the Award for Excellence.
