Shari Yvon-Lewis
I am Dr. Shari Yvon-Lewis, and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University, USA. During the ESASSI cruise, my 2 students and I will be measuring gases dissolved in seawater. The gases we are studying are called CFCs and HCFCs. They are freons and replacements for the freons. We use the concentrations of these gases in the water to study the mixing of the water masses. We make these measurements using an analytical chemistry technique called gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. During the cruise, we will work in shifts to collect and analyze samples 24 hours a day. During my off time, I like to write emails to my family, read fiction novels and of course enjoy the sights of the Antarctic looking for seals and penguins on the ice floes.
