Campus Extens is a flexible distance project that has been established by the University of the Balearic (UIB) Islands following some of the basic principles of open learning.

This project is a response by the UIB to the requirements of the smaller islands to contribute to equality of opportunity for students, to provide improved access to higher education for the general population, and to continually improve professional competence.

The courses are semi-presential, and offer degree and postgraduate studies with the support of information technology. In this sense we are initiating university studies which use the presently available technology as a starting point.

All this requires adequate methodological device that contemplate individual learning joined to interaction (synchronous and asynchronous). In this respect we have designed a mixed system of training based in autonomous learning supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and face to face activities through a videoconferencing system (which links classrooms with the various centres where all the students (face to face and distance) participate in the same activities); and a face to face and electronic tutoring system. We have a powerful network which links the Multimedia Resource Centres located in the off campus learning centres of the UIB, and also the students at home. In other hand, we use WebCT which permit the interaction between lecturers and students and the access to the multimedia teaching materials.
